Following its currently running world premiere at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, David Henry Hwang’s Chinglish will come to an as-yet-unnamed Shubert Theatre on Broadway this fall. Leigh Silverman, who is helming the Chicago production, will direct. Casting and dates for the production have not been announced.
Chinglish chronicles the journey of an American businessman who travels to China looking to score a lucrative contact for his family's sign-making firm. The Chicago cast features James Waterston as the American businessman, Stephen Pucci as an Australian consultant and Jennifer Lim as a Chinese official.
Tony winner and two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist Hwang is the author of the plays M. Butterfly, Face Value and Golden Child, as well as books for musicals Aida, Tarzan and the 2002 updated version of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Flower Drum Song. He has previously collaborated with Silverman on Yellow Face at Center Theater Group in Los Angeles and New York’s Public Theater.
The Broadway production of Chinglish will be produced by Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel as well as Roy Gottlieb, Barry and Carole Kaye, and David and Barbara Stoller in association with the Goodman Theater. Chinglish was developed in association with the Public Theater, which previously announced the play as part of its 2011-2012 season.
